SUMMARY:GREATER HOGSBACK COMMUNITY WORKSHOP WITH SINEGUGU ZIKULU
DESCRIPTION:\nAn opportunity to motivate ALL of Hogsback and neighbouring villages as a community to come together as never before and work towards a common goal. Come to listen to his advice on how we as a GREATER HOGSBACK COMMUNITY can unite and stand up for our rights and access to the land. Sinegugu is a brave warrior. However, he stands for non-destructive activism and unity when it comes to protecting human rights, civil rights, land conservation and upholding the Constitution.\n\n\n\nPondoland’s dynamic & inspiring historian, botanist, geographer & storyteller Sinegugu Zukulu, a deeply committedsocial and environmental & human rights activist and educator.Sinegugu was born on the Pondoland Wild Coast. He is a champion of bottom-up locally induced human-scale development that will benefit local people. He has many years of standing up for the rights of rural communities affected by extractive industries. Sinegugu has thirteen years of geography teaching at Kearsney College. He has two academic degrees: BA Ed (Geography and Education), and a Master of Philosophy in Environmental Management, done through Stellenbosch University. Sinegugu has authored more than ten books, of which the latest is the Medicinal and Charm plants of Pondoland. He was nominated one of the top seven 2015 South African Conservationists of the year. He has won Ecologic Eco-Warrior category environmental award for his activist work in 2019. He also won 2019 MEC Lilizela Award for Eco-tourism development in the Eastern Cape. He is among the top Africa Indigenous People’s Conservation Leaders in negotiations.\n\n\n\nIn recent news, Sinegugu and the people of the Wild Coast took Shell to the High Court in Makanda in a fight against the exploration for oil and gas off the Wild Coast. On 1 September 2022 the High Court ruled in favor of Sinegugu (first applicant), his team, Sustaining the Wild Coast and other applicants in the case and Shell’s exploration rights were set aside. Sinegugu and the Sustaining the Wild Coast team, have also been responsible for holding the mining companies off their land of Xolobeni for 20 years. It has been a long struggle against big corporations and the Department of Mineral Resources. Hwever, the miners have been held off their land because of the power of the people. In January 2022 a small fundraising event was held at Terra-Khaya and an excess of R30 000.00 was raised for Sustaining the Wild Coast to assist with legal costs and their fight to protect their land.\n\n\n\n\n
