Big Tree
The Big Tree is a remarkable Outeniqua Yellowwood (Podocarpus falcatus), estimated to be around 800 years old, and one of Hogsback’s most iconic natural landmarks.
An ancient forest giant
Its massive trunk and towering canopy reflect the ancient indigenous forests of the Amathole Mountains.
A keystone of the forest
Yellowwoods provide food, shelter and nesting sites for many forest species. They are especially important to the endangered Cape Parrot, which relies heavily on yellowwood seeds. The decline of mature yellowwood forest also places pressure on other forest-dependent birds and mammals.
