Tor Doone
Tor Doone is a smaller mountain and is a common hiking peak close to the village.
The route usually starts at the Arboretum and follows forest and contour paths through planted and indigenous forest. The trail climbs steadily over uneven ground with rocks and roots, ending in a steeper final section to the summit.
From the top there are views over Hogsback, surrounding Amathole peaks, and valleys. Cell towers are visible nearby. Distance is about 7–8 km depending on the route. Difficulty is moderate to strenuous. The trail can be slippery when wet and sections may be unclear or overgrown.
Key points: good footwear needed, weather changes quickly, finish in daylight, and allow time for the return.
Fort Mitchell history
Near the route are references to Fort Mitchell, a former British outpost, with a commemorative plaque along the trail.
Note: some trails in Hogsback require permits
