HOGSBACK MUSHROOM FESTIVAL

A fungi-tastic first-of-its-kind event celebrating all things mushroom in South Africa. Meet and learn from some of South Africa’s top mycologists at this unique fungi full-day event.
The Fungal Renaissance
This year we celebrate “The fungal renaissance” with keynote speakers presenting on five exciting themes:
- Celebrate the fungal renaissance: why the mushroom revival is a planetary game changer
- Identification/classification and sustainable foraging
- Psilocybin and the deep sacred magic of mushrooms
- Medicinal mushrooms: how fungi are healing humanity
- Large and small-scale cultivation of culinary/medicinal mushrooms (live demo on log inoculation)

The Speakers

Marieka Gryzenhout. Marieka’s main passions are the classification and biodiversity of all kinds of fungi. She has expertise not only in microfungi, but also in macrofungi such as mushrooms. Marieka is enthused to share her knowledge and work actively to promote the fields under citizen mycologists. Marieka is a prolific publisher, including two field guides on macrofungi of Southern Africa. She serves on scientific committees, including as President of the African Mycological Association and currently as Vice-President of the South African Genetics Committee, she also serves on the IUCN conservation committees.
The Dinner
The gala dinner is scheduled at 17:30 for 18:00 and will offer a sit-down three-course culinary experience: a taste journey through the fungiverse and the very best Hogsback chefs can offer up with the star of the show … gourmet mushrooms!
The Festival
“My vision with this festival is to create an environmentally responsible and unique event that celebrates the beautiful jewel that is Hogsback -and the astounding fungi found here. Speakers will present from 9am till 4pm with breaks between to take in the Hogsback experience and visit the fungi-inspired art exhibitions, food stands, and other exhibitors including the famous Saturday Edge Market.
