Movie Club 6 December 2020

Hogsback Movie Club Sunday 6th December

This month our Movie club will be meeting again back at the very special Rose Theatre (weather permitting) at 18:30  at the Starways Art Centre. This amazing open-air theatre, built in the forest is indeed a unique location for our movie club.

The club is open to all (entry fee R30 to cover electricity and wood).  A list of 5 movies from 5 different genres will be circulated to members beforehand, who will then vote as they arrive for their 1st and second choices of the movie they would like to see. The movie with the most votes will then be screened after which we will have a lively discussion about the movie!

Bring your own picnic basket or come and braai or just come for the movie which will start at 19h30.  The braai fires will be lit at 18h00.

The December selection is meant to reflect that time of the year when we believe in magic and fairy tales. For this reason, I have selected a combination of films and animations that should fit the bill:

The films for our movie night are:

Choice of movies for December movie club

  • “Etrangement court”
“Etrangement court” is a collection of 10 short movies and animations showcasing the amazing creativity of young filmmakers in humoristic, parodic and even solemn registers. Highly recommended.
  • “Fantastic Planet” (or La Planète sauvage in its original version) is a Franco-Czechoslovakian experimental adult animated science fiction film, which was animated at Jiří Trnka Studio in Prague in 1973, and is the allegorical story about humans living on a strange planet dominated by giant humanoid aliens who consider them animals. The story is based on the 1957 novel “Oms en série” by French writer Stefan Wul.
  • “The Rabbi’s Cat” is an animation based on several chapters of the graphic novel of the same name about a rabbi’s cat that learns to speak after eating a parrot, and asks to convert to Judaism. The story delves into the little-known history of the Jewish community in pre-World War II Algeria. Expect mature themes. The cat is sharp.
  • “The Triplets of Belleville” tells the story of a French cyclist who is kidnapped and taken to… well you’ll have to see the movie to find out. Let it be known that the cyclist’s grand-mother and dog come to his rescue and, in the process, meet up with once famous cabaret entertainers, the Triplets of Belleville. A fantastic, entertaining and explosive story that will keep you awake. And finally,
  • “Poulet aux prunes” (Chicken with plums) is the magico-realistic film of Marjane Satrapi (who wrote and illustrated “Persepolis”) and Vincent Paronnaud, about famed musician Nasser Ali Khan (played by Mathieu Amalric) who loses the will to live after his violin broke. Unable to find a replacement for the instrument, Nasser decides to retreat to his bed and await death. As he waits, Nasser plunges deep into reverie… a visually compelling film with a lot of soul and poetry. but in the end, it is a love story.
