Away with the Fairies
Away with the Fairies is a unique backpackers and self catering establishment, situated close to the centre of our little village.
Established in 1997, Away with the Fairies is perched on the edge of a cliff, overlooking the magical Auckland Nature Reserve which borders our property. From the breathtaking View Point and the World Famous Bath which are right on the edge of the cliff, you can see the best views of the Hogsback Mountains and indigenous forests in the area.
The main hiking trails in the area start and finish at Away with the Fairies, taking you through one of only two Grade 1 indigenous forests in South Africa. The Eastern Cape Monarch, or The Big Tree as it prefers to be known, is a Giant Yellowwood estimated to be between 800 and 2000 years old and is directly in front of the backpackers. It is a mere 40 minute hike through the magical Auckland Nature Reserve on the way to the 3 outstanding waterfalls: Swallow Tail, Bridal Veil and Madonna and Child.
Facilities
They offer accommodation to suit almost every need, from Frodo’s and Bilbo’s En-Suite Cottage, to Striders Hikers Cottage a 6 room En-Suite, The 2 bedroom self catering Hobbit Cottage, to doubles and twins to dorms and camping.
They offer breakfasts, evening meals and delicious homemade pizzas, made the healthy way with stone-ground flour. This is served 7 days a week, but if you choose to cook your own food they also have two self catering kitchens one at the Away with the Fairies and one on our neighbouring property, Striders.
As the sun sets and the best day of your life inevitably comes to an end, why not drown your sorrows with a cold one, watching the Hogs change colour at our World Class Viewpoint or if you want to do it properly, soak away the aches and pains of the days hike in our cliff-edge bath tub? Once the sun has set move up to our bar and maybe mingle around our star gazing fire pit.
Away with the Fairies runs on solar heated water and we recycle all we can, to keep the earth and Hogsback green and clean!

Rates:
- Camping – R100pp
- Dorms – R190-R200pp (sleeps 6 to 8 people)
- Private rooms – R500-R900 per room (sleeps 2-4 people)
- En-suite rooms – R500-R600 per room (sleeps 2)
