Kettlespout Falls (hike)
The Kettlespout falls is a lovely hike depending on which of the routes you use. Under the right conditions, when there is a good waterflow after rains, with the wind blowing strongly in the right direction, the water is blown as much as 5 meters upwards before coming down in a spray of mist, imitating a kettle boiling. A spectacular sight.
The Kettlespout Falls can be reached via several alternative starting points and routes, depending how long you want the walk to be.
Top view
You can use the top route via Oak avenue, turning right into Forest drive (*), provided the Main road gate is open and you have a permit to drive into the forests. Otherwise you can make it a lovely hike via the Arboretum and the Contour path. When you drive along Forest drive to the start of the Kettle spout fall hike, take the left fork following the little board that says “Kettlespout upper viewpoint” you will see a parking space and the information board at the start of the hike on the right (A). It definitely takes longer than the board says!!
Follow the route up through the forest. It is usually very wet and slippery so remember your walking stick and good hiking boots. The road will veer right and you will have an amazing view over Hogsback to the left. It has a precipice to the right. so not suitable for those with fear of heights or small children.
Top route
You can also drive further along Forest drive and descend towards Kettlespout falls, provided the forestry gate is open. Otherwise hike from the bottom parking space. Pass through the forestry gate and keep going up and around. Look out for the Kettlespout little board on the right. Follow the oath down, crossing a little wooden bridge.
Lower deck view
This is a steep and slippery climb. You drive further on with Forest drive and look out for the Kettlespout lower deck sign. Turn left you will follow that path for about 300m and will then see a parking space on the right. Go towards your right across a little wooden bridge and then turn left. If you go right you will end up at Hobbiton. After 200 m you will see a path going right, do not take it, keep going left until you see a sign that points right towards Kettlespout. Follow the winding steep path until you reach a huge rock face. Turn towards the left following the base of the rockface until you see the viewing platform from where you will be able to view the Kettelspout fall from below.
