The waterfall

A waterfall at the end of a garden walk.

39 Steps is reached through Hogsback’s Arboretum, where paths wind below old trees, across streams and through a garden planted over more than a century.

The falls are compact and approachable. Their setting makes the visit distinctive: this is as much a walk among trees as it is a waterfall outing.

The falls

Water finding its way down natural steps.

The name describes the stepped character of the stream as it moves through rock and vegetation. The appearance changes with rainfall: after wet weather the separate cascades join into a stronger flow, while dry periods reveal more of the rock.

Paths and viewpoints can be damp. Take your time around the water, particularly where leaves and moss cover stone.

The Arboretum

Trees gathered from around the world.

The Arboretum combines Hogsback’s mountain climate with a planted collection from many parts of the world. Identification labels turn a casual stroll into an informal botanical tour.

Among the best-known trees are Californian redwoods planted more than a century ago, now towering above the garden paths.

A living collection

Planted over a century ago.

The Arboretum grew from early plantings into one of Hogsback’s most loved public spaces. Its mature trees, lawns, paths and stream crossings make it easy to visit slowly rather than simply walk straight to the falls.

Community care remains part of its story. The Hogsback Garden Club helps maintain and improve the Arboretum for residents and visitors.

Take the longer way

The garden paths are part of the visit.

There is no single compulsory circuit. Follow the stream, look for labelled trees and allow time to explore the smaller paths.
