A road through snow-covered trees in Hogsback

Winter on the mountain

Snow in
Hogsback

Snow is a real part of Hogsback winter. It is also mountain weather: changeable, localised and impossible to promise for a particular weekend.

The honest answer

Yes, it snows.
No, we cannot book it.

Winter brings the best chance of snow to Hogsback and the higher Amathole country. Some cold fronts transform the village; others leave only frost, rain, mist or snow on the surrounding high ground.

Even when a forecast shows snow, the amount and exact location can change. The village, forests and nearby peaks do not always receive the same conditions. Plan for winter, watch the latest forecast, and treat fresh snow as the mountain’s surprise.

Before you leave

Check again.
Then check locally.

A forecast is a planning tool, not a promise. Check it shortly before travelling and again on the morning of your trip. Pay attention to warnings, freezing temperatures, rain and wind as well as the snow symbol.

When a cold front arrives, local road information can change faster than a general forecast. Ask your accommodation host about conditions in the village and on your intended approach before setting out.

A beautiful day can still be a difficult drive

Come prepared
for winter.

01

Wear proper layers

Bring warm, waterproof outerwear, sturdy closed shoes, dry socks and gloves. Snow quickly becomes cold water and mud.

02

Respect the road

Slow down, leave space and do not stop in the traffic lane for photographs. Mud, ice, fallen branches and busy roads can all follow a snowfall.

03

Know your vehicle

Do not continue onto a slippery or damaged road because other vehicles have done so. Turn back when the conditions exceed your vehicle or experience.

04

Leave room for the village

Use public areas, obey closures and keep entrances clear. Gardens, verges and fields that look inviting may be private property.

Look a little closer

Not every snowfall
is a white-out.

Sometimes snow lies deep beneath the trees. Sometimes it dusts the ridges, catches in a garden or melts as quickly as it lands.

That is part of the experience. Winter here is also wood smoke, clear mountain light, mist through the forest, warm meals and cold walks. A trip does not need a perfect snow scene to feel like Hogsback in winter.
